Classic Montana Mule Deer, Done the Right Way

Broken Plains Outfitting Company offers authentic Montana mule deer hunts built around hard work, respect for the animal, and the land these deer live on. These hunts take place across big sky country, river breaks, rolling hills, and agricultural ground, giving hunters multiple ways to pursue mature bucks based on their ability and preference.

This is not a high-country pack-in hunt — but it is real Western hunting. Expect to walk, glass, and cover ground. We can tailor each hunt to the hunter, whether that means longer spot-and-stalk efforts or hunting edges of alfalfa fields with less physical demand. We believe in hunting at your pace.

Our typical harvest range falls between 150”–170” bucks, with consistent opportunity on 180”–190” class mule deer each season.

Ethical Harvest Philosophy

At Broken Plains, we value the animal before and after the hunt.

We encourage every hunter to have a plan for:

  • Meat transport
  • Processing
  • Hides and capes

If hunters cannot take their meat home, it will be processed at their expense and donated to those in need.

Our hunts center around respect, conservation, and full utilization of each animal harvested.

What to Bring

We can provide a rifle if needed.

Archery hunters must bring their own archery equipment.

  • Quality leather lace-up hunting boots (no rubber boots)
  • Pack for meat hauling
  • Binoculars
  • Weather-appropriate hunting clothing
  • Cooler if driving

Temperature Expectations:

  • Archery: 70–90°F possible
  • Rifle: 50°F down to 0°F

Physical Fitness Expectations

While this is not extreme backcountry hunting, we do expect hunters to arrive physically prepared.

We recommend all clients train ahead of the hunt to comfortably handle:

  • Walking up and down hills
  • Moderate terrain
  • Long periods of glassing and slow stalking

Being prepared allows you to enjoy the experience more and hunt more effectively.

Broken Plains Outfitting Company is rooted in the rugged landscapes of the Upper Missouri River Breaks of Central Montana, where wild country, honest hunting, and hard-earned success define every experience we offer. Our operation is built around providing authentic, no-frills hunts on quality ground, with a strong emphasis on wild animals, ethical practices, and respect for the land.

In Montana, we specialize in guided waterfowl, upland bird, mule deer, and Merriam’s turkey hunts, operating across diverse terrain that ranges from river bottoms and coulees to open prairie and mountain foothills. We focus on private-land access, limited hunting pressure, and hunt styles that reflect how these species are meant to be pursued—whether that’s late-season ducks on the river, wild upland birds over pointing dogs, or spot-and-stalk deer and turkey hunts in big country.

Beyond Montana, Broken Plains also offers bowfishing adventures during the spring and summer months in both the Florida Panhandle and upstate New York, giving our clients year-round opportunities to stay on the water and in the field.

At our core, Broken Plains Outfitting Company exists to deliver real experiences for hunters and anglers who value wild places, honest effort, and doing things the right way. Whether you’re chasing birds in Montana or bowfishing in Florida, we aim to provide trips that are memorable, ethical, and true to the traditions of the outdoors.
