Welcome to Waltrip & Cortez SportFishing & Tour Co. This sportfishing company was founded by Justin Waltrip and Capt. Javier Cortez. As an avid sport fisherman for most of my adult life, I have always been in search of the greatest sport fishing spots. I believe I have found it here on the south pacific coast of Costa Rica. While fishing the waters of the Osa Peninsula, with legendary capt. Donald McGuinness, I met Capt. Javier Cortez and with our shared passion for sportfishing we quickly became friends. Capt. Javier Cortez has trained under Capt. Donald McGuinness for 23 years, since the age of 14. We found and purchased a Shamrock 28ft Predator and after upgrading all the systems we added a top of the line 10 person life raft and coast guard transponder because safety is the only thing more important than fishing. We upgraded the boat to have better tuna tubes, brand new cummings engine, comfort decking, high grade marine bean bag chairs, and fishing chair. With extremely competitive rates on all types of fishing and boating tours, we are sure that we can customize your trip to fit your budget and your bucket list. Captain Javier specializes in Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Dolphin (Maui Maui) but also is very knowledgeable in pursuing Snook, Rooster Fish, Cubera Snapper, Amberjack, and Pompano.

If you’re ready to go sport fishing in Quepos, come aboard the Dia Tuanis. Captain Javier will be your guide, which allows you to benefit from more than 19 years of knowledge and experience.

Around here, fishing is popular for Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Black Marlin, Cubera Snapper, Roosterfish, Sailfish, and more with any luck. During the trip, you might be spinning, popping, trolling, jigging, or maybe something more specialized in this area. Fish caught during the trip are yours to take home, so long as they’re within the legal limit. The crew can even clean your catch for you. Have a cooler ready in the car!

Your fishing machine for the day is a 28’ Shamrock offshore sport fishing with space for 4 passengers. It has outriggers, a fighting chair, and all the essentials, plus a toilet on board for your convenience. Capt. Javier will provide rods and reels for you, as well as lures. Live bait is on offer, but you should ask the captain whether you’ll be catching it yourself. Planning a family adventure? Kids are absolutely welcome! If you don’t have a child-sized life vest of your own, be sure to ask if there’s one on board. Remember to bring a hat, sunglasses, bottled water, and sunblock (non-spray). Drinks are included, free of charge. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, but avoid hard liquor and glass bottles. There will be light snacks available on board.

A First Mate will be there to make sure everything is running smoothly. Mates often work for tips, and it’s customary to offer them a 10–20% tip. You might need to get a local fishing license before the trip. This information is usually available online, or you can ask the captain. Some species may be off-limits or require a special tag, so make sure you know what to expect.
