About
Every year Pineridge Grouse Camp offers a woodcock banding clinic for those interested in seeing how to band woodcock and potentially being able to get a permit from his or her state to band woodcock themselves the following spring. The dates for 2025 are currently set for May 14-17. These dates may change, and it will be updated here and on pineridgegrousecamp.com. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER!! NO EXCEPTIONS!! You will be guided through a very informative power point program discussing the following:
- Why band woodcock
- Habitat needs for spring nesting
- Equipment needed to band
- The role of the pointing dog in banding
- Statistical data collected through the years of banding in the US
- Actually go out as help band
- And much more!
We will also have a presentation on how to create woodcock habitat, getting your dog staunch to flush so you can band, and hopefully if the males cooperate, witness firsthand a sky dance. Your pointing dog is welcome to attend as well. If you would like to pursue a permit to band your pointing dog MUST GET CERTIFIED TO BAND WOODCOCK. This can be done at this clinic under the guidance of Jerry Havel of Pineridge Grouse Camp.
We have very limited spots available for this program. Meals are included in the program and PGC also offers a limited amount of RV hookups (electric only). If you’re interested, please call (218) 301-6083 or email grousecamp@gmail.com for availability, pricing and to answer any other questions you may have on this chance to see the timberdoodle other than the fall.

Pineridge Grouse Camp is nestled in the heart of endless acres of pristine public hunting land, offering an unmatched wing shooting experience in Northern Minnesota. Our expert guides—specializing in wildlife biology, forestry, and dog training—bring a wealth of knowledge to enrich every hunt. At Pineridge, we pride ourselves on our exceptional line of Pineridge Elhew Pointers, trained year-round to excel in the field and woods. Hunting behind these athletic, driven dogs is an experience like no other. As owner Jerry Havel says, “Northern Minnesota offers the perfect proving ground for great grouse dogs, with wild grouse and woodcock to test their skills. For the true grouse and woodcock enthusiast, Pineridge is more than a hunting destination—it’s a place to immerse yourself in the tradition of wild birds, fine side-by-side shotguns, bird dogs, and evenings by the fire with a bourbon in hand.
