Northeast Wilderness Outfitters offers guided black bear hunts in the remote forests of western Maine. This region provides ideal habitat for black bears, with vast timberlands, regenerating cuts, and natural food sources that support a healthy and sustainable bear population.

Our hunts are designed to give hunters several effective and traditional methods to pursue black bear. Hunters may choose between baited site hunts, limited hound hunts, or trapping adventures, each offering a unique approach to bear hunting in Maine’s big-woods environment.

To ensure a quality experience and maintain low hunting pressure, we limit the number of hunters booked each week. This allows our guides to properly prepare bait sites, monitor bear activity, and focus on providing a safe and organized hunt.

Hunting Methods

Baited Black Bear Hunts

Our baited hunts are conducted over established bait sites located throughout our hunting areas. Hunters are placed in ground blinds located throughout our property. Each hunter typically has access to multiple bait sites, which are monitored with trail cameras prior to the hunt to identify active bears and improve hunting opportunities.

Black Bear Hunts with Hounds

Hound hunting provides an exciting and physically demanding way to pursue black bears. Our experienced guides and trained dogs track and pursue bears through the Maine woods until the animal is treed or bayed. Hunters then move in with the guide for the opportunity to harvest the bear. These hunts are limited to four hunters per week.

Bear Trapping Adventures

For hunters interested in a different type of experience, we also offer bear trapping hunts. These hunts allow guests to participate in setting and checking traps while learning about the techniques used to manage bears in remote wilderness areas.

Bear Size & Expectations

Black bears harvested in this region typically average around 150 pounds, with opportunities each season to take larger bears. Mature bears exceeding 300 pounds are taken periodically in our hunting areas.

All big game hunts include a 6 day hunt with a 7 night stay and meals provided, unless otherwise noted.
