New Mexico Big Horn Sheep Hunts

Double O Outfitters – Bighorn Sheep Hunts in the Rio Grande Gorge

An Elite Hunt in One of New Mexico’s Most Rugged and Scenic Landscapes

For hunters seeking the ultimate challenge and a once-in-a-lifetime trophy, Double O Outfitters offers premier guided bighorn sheep hunts in the breathtaking Rio Grande Gorge region of northern New Mexico. Hunting here is more than a pursuit—it’s an expedition into one of the state’s most remote and awe-inspiring environments, home to the elusive and iconic desert bighorn sheep.

The Setting: The Rio Grande Gorge

Carved over centuries by the Rio Grande River, the Rio Grande Gorge is an 800-foot-deep canyon surrounded by high mesas, sharp ridgelines, and steep rock faces. This stunning high-desert terrain spans Game Management Units 49, 50, and 53, encompassing a wide range of habitat perfect for Ovis canadensis mexicana—the desert bighorn sheep.

This unique region offers:

• Remote, challenging terrain with limited hunting pressure
• Panoramic views and dramatic elevation changes
• A pristine, wild environment filled with mule deer, mountain lions, coyotes, and golden eagles

The Hunt

Hunting bighorn sheep is one of the most physically and mentally demanding pursuits in North American big game hunting. Our hunts require:

• Excellent physical conditioning for navigating steep, rocky terrain
• Advanced glassing and stalking tactics, often involving long-range observation and challenging approaches
• Strategic positioning to close the distance in rugged country
• Stealth and patience, as desert rams are notoriously alert and elusive

With the help of Double O’s experienced guides, hunters will spend long days glassing remote cliffs, crawling over ridgelines, and carefully closing the distance for a responsible, ethical shot.
