Montana Mountain Goat Hunts

About
Mountain goat hunting in Montana is one of North America’s most challenging and rewarding big-game pursuits. These hunts take place in extreme alpine terrain where steep rock, thin air, and rapidly changing weather demand physical endurance, careful planning, and experienced guidance.
Pioneer Outfitters Montana is permitted to provide guided mountain goat hunts in Hunt District 312-20, available by special draw only for both resident and non-resident hunters. Applications must be submitted through Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, with a typical deadline of May 1 each year. Hunters are encouraged to review current regulations and draw odds directly with FWP.
Our permitted hunting area lies deep in Montana’s high country—an expansive alpine landscape defined by rugged ridgelines, glacier-carved basins, and peaks rising above 10,000 feet. Camp is established near timberline, allowing efficient access to goat habitat while minimizing daily elevation gain. This remote environment offers exceptional glassing opportunities across cliff bands, alpine lakes, and steep rock faces where mountain goats thrive.
To support both comfort and efficiency in this terrain, trained pack llamas are used to transport camp, food, and equipment into the backcountry. On a successful harvest, llamas also assist with safely and ethically packing out your mountain goat.
The mountain goat season in this district typically opens in early September and runs through late November, depending on weather and access. Based on decades of mountain experience, we recommend scheduling hunts for late September through mid-October, when conditions are generally more stable and access to high-elevation terrain is most reliable. Early winter storms can significantly impact mobility and safety in alpine environments.
Once you have successfully drawn a goat tag for HD 312-20, Pioneer Outfitters Montana will work directly with you to design a custom hunt tailored to your fitness level, experience, and seasonal conditions.
