The Coot Camp Lodge isn’t just a place to stay—it’s a Louisiana legacy that stretches back nearly 80 years. Originally established in 1946, the Shell family discovered Bay Dogris as a remote hunting and fishing haven after World War II. What began as a primitive shack built on seashells with kerosene lamps and a propane stove slowly evolved through generations of hard work and love for the marsh.
In 1965, the camp was rebuilt with modest upgrades like DC lights, a small generator, and propane cooking, but still no showers—just a cold hose under the house for the brave. Over the decades, hurricanes like Katrina and Ida destroyed much of what the family had built, but each time, the Shells rebuilt with more determination. After Hurricane Ida in 2021, the family constructed the third and most impressive version of the camp: today’s Coot Camp Lodge, a hidden gem that locals proudly call “the Four Seasons on Bay Dogris.”
Modern Comfort in the Marsh
Today, Coot Camp Lodge is completely off-grid yet fully modernized. Powered by solar with a 7kW diesel generator as backup and connected to the world with Starlink Wi-Fi, the lodge offers the rare blend of seclusion and convenience. Guests enjoy instant hot water, full bathrooms, spacious living areas, and panoramic views of the surrounding marshlands in every direction.
The camp’s namesake—the coot duck—was once found here in the thousands, drawn to the same solitude and stillness that guests now experience. True to its heritage, the lodge provides a sense of peace that inspires reflection and connection with Louisiana’s wild beauty.
