About

Experience Open Country Mule Deer Hunting

Broken Plains offers authentic Montana mule deer hunting across the rugged terrain of the Upper Missouri River Breaks. Vast prairie, steep coulees, and rolling foothills create prime habitat for mature bucks and provide the perfect setting for a classic Western spot-and-stalk hunt.

With expansive private ground and access to some of the most iconic mule deer country in Central Montana, Broken Plains gives hunters the opportunity to pursue truly impressive bucks in wild, unpressured country. We consistently harvest 150”+ mule deer, with opportunity on 180”-190” class mule deer each season. It’s a hunt defined by patience, persistence, and the unforgettable experience of chasing mule deer across Big Sky Country.

This is not a high-country pack-in hunt, but there is still a lot of topography and elevation changes to navigate. Physical conditioning prior to the hunt is recommended. Expect to walk, glass, and cover a lot of ground. While less demanding hunting styles can be accommodated, covering ground through spot-and-stalk hunting greatly increases chances of success.

What to Expect

Spot-and-stalk mule deer hunting

Glassing and stalking across various topography

Lower-impact hunts available if needed

Typically walking several miles per day

Rolling hills, breaks, and moderate terrain

Not extreme mountain hunting, but physical readiness is expected

Hunting will take place mornings and evenings, with the possibility of all-day hunts

Archery season temperatures typically range from 65° to 90°

Preparation & Physical Fitness Expectations

While this is not extreme backcountry hunting, we do expect hunters to arrive physically prepared. We recommend all clients train ahead of the hunt to comfortably handle:

  • Walking up and down hills
  • Moderate terrain
  • Long periods of glassing and slow stalking

Being prepared allows you to enjoy the experience more and hunt more effectively.

Ethical Harvest Philosophy

At Broken Plains, we value the animal before and after the hunt. We encourage every hunter to have a plan for:

If hunters cannot take their meat home, it will be processed at their expense and donated to those in need.
