Pursue North America's Most Iconic Big Game Animal
South Dakota Access Guide Service offers fully customized American bison hunting opportunities across both private ranches and select Lakota tribal lands throughout South Dakota. Whether you're seeking a traditional ranch-style buffalo hunt or the opportunity to pursue bison on expansive tribal lands, our team can help match you with the experience that best fits your goals.
These hunts provide hunters with the opportunity to harvest one of North America's most historic and impressive game animals while experiencing the vast prairie landscapes where bison have played a vital role for generations.
Through partnerships with private landowners and tribal guides, hunters gain access to diverse terrain ranging from rolling grasslands and cattle country to expansive prairie landscapes and reservation lands. Every hunt is coordinated based on available opportunities, herd management objectives, and the specific experience each hunter is seeking.
Bison offer an unforgettable hunting experience and provide an exceptional amount of high-quality, grass-fed protein. Depending on the animal harvested, hunters can expect to take home hundreds of pounds of meat in addition to a beautiful hide and trophy horns.
Private Ranch Bison Hunts
Private ranch bison hunts take place on a spectacular family-owned working cattle and bison ranch encompassing approximately 4,000 acres of rugged South Dakota terrain. The diverse landscape creates a challenging and rewarding hunting experience that combines spot-and-stalk opportunities with strategic glassing and careful shot placement.
Unlike many fenced-game operations, these hunts take place across large pastures where bison utilize natural terrain features, requiring hunters to work alongside experienced guides to locate and approach animals effectively.
Each private ranch hunt includes a half-day scouting session followed by a full day of hunting. Hunters stay in a comfortable ranch house and enjoy home-cooked meals while experiencing authentic ranch life throughout their stay.
Young Bull Hunt
Young Bull hunts target animals approximately 3.5 to 4.5 years old.
Hunters can expect a mature animal weighing over 1,000 pounds and yielding approximately 300–350 pounds of premium grass-fed meat, along with a hide and horns suitable for taxidermy or display.
Trophy Bull Hunt
Trophy Bull hunts target mature bulls generally eight years of age or older.
These impressive animals often exceed 2,000 pounds and can yield more than 450 pounds of premium grass-fed meat. Trophy bulls feature larger body size, heavier horn bases, and exceptional trophy characteristics.
Lakota Tribal Land Bison Hunts
South Dakota Access also partners with tribal guides across multiple Lakota reservations, offering hunters unique opportunities to pursue bison on lands rich in history, culture, and conservation significance.
These hunts provide access to expansive prairie landscapes that closely resemble the environments where bison once roamed by the millions. Tribal bison hunts offer a deeply meaningful experience while supporting ongoing herd management and conservation efforts.
Cheyenne River Reservation
Cheyenne River's vast prairie landscapes and cultural heritage create a unique setting for bison hunting. Expansive grasslands and open-country terrain provide ideal habitat for tribal bison management programs.
Pine Ridge Reservation
Pine Ridge offers rugged prairie country and a strong historical connection to the American bison. Hunters can experience a meaningful and memorable hunt while pursuing animals across scenic reservation landscapes.
Lower Brule Reservation
Situated along the Missouri River, Lower Brule combines rolling prairie, river influence, and open grasslands that support healthy bison populations and ongoing conservation efforts.
Crow Creek Reservation
Crow Creek provides additional tribal hunting opportunities across productive prairie habitat while allowing hunters to participate in an important part of the region's wildlife management and cultural heritage.
