About this trip
Virgin Creek Outfitters | South Dakota Tribal & Private Lands
2-Day South Dakota Prairie Dog Hunt
Wide-open country. Long-range shooting. Plenty of trigger time.
Virgin Creek Outfitters' prairie dog hunts offer a completely different way to experience the open country of Western South Dakota.
Set up overlooking active prairie dog towns and spend the day testing your shooting skills across distances that can change with every opportunity. Whether you're an experienced varmint hunter or looking for a laid-back shooting trip with friends, this is an easy hunt to enjoy.
A Long-Range Shooter's Playground
Prairie dog hunting is as much about shooting as it is hunting.
You'll have opportunities to work through different distances, adjust for wind and elevation, learn your rifle and make corrections throughout the day. As nearby opportunities become educated or disappear underground, attention shifts farther out and the challenge increases.
It's a great opportunity to put quality optics, accurate rifles and good ammunition to work in real-world field conditions.
How We Hunt
We'll set up around productive prairie dog towns and allow hunters to establish comfortable shooting positions overlooking active areas.
Depending on conditions, hunters may:
- Shoot from benches or supported field positions
- Move between prairie dog towns
- Engage targets at varying distances
- Adjust for South Dakota prairie winds
- Spend extended periods shooting from a single productive setup
Bring plenty of ammunition. This hunt is designed to give shooters time behind the rifle.

Licensing & Hunt Area
Prairie dog regulations depend on the jurisdiction and specific land being hunted.
The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe publishes separate prairie dog season regulations for tribal jurisdiction, while South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks governs applicable state hunting areas.
Hunters should confirm the appropriate license, hunt location and current regulations with Virgin Creek Outfitters before arrival.
