About this trip

Virgin Creek Outfitters | Cheyenne River Country, South Dakota

Hunt the Open Country of Western South Dakota

There is something different about hunting deer on the Northern Great Plains. Big country, broken draws, endless grasslands, creek bottoms and miles of country where a mature buck can disappear in a matter of seconds.

At Virgin Creek Outfitters, our mule deer and whitetail hunts put you in the middle of that country.

Based in South Dakota, Virgin Creek Outfitters offers guided deer hunts with opportunities associated with the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation region as well as applicable South Dakota state-licensed ground, depending on the hunt and land status. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe manages wildlife on tribal trust lands within the reservation under its own licensing system and hunting seasons, separate from South Dakota's state system.

This is not a hunt built around sitting in one spot and hoping something happens. We hunt the country in front of us. That can mean covering ground, glassing distant ridges and draws, watching travel corridors, working creek bottoms, and making a stalk when we locate the right buck.

The objective is simple: find mature deer and put our hunters in position to capitalize.

Two Species. One Incredible Piece of Deer Country.

One of the greatest things about this region is the opportunity to encounter both mule deer and whitetails.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation lies within the mixed-grass prairie of the Northern Great Plains. Rather than being one uniform landscape, the prairie is made up of a mosaic of different habitat communities that support a variety of wildlife.

For the deer hunter, that creates an exciting mix of country.

Mule deer can be found utilizing the more open terrain, broken prairie, draws and expansive country where glassing becomes one of our most important tools. We spend time picking apart distant terrain, looking for antlers, movement and mature bucks tucked into places that are easy to overlook.

Whitetails add an entirely different element to the hunt. Creek and river corridors, agricultural areas, cover and broken terrain can create excellent travel and feeding habitat. Hunters should be prepared for anything—from spotting a buck at distance to having a whitetail suddenly appear out of a drainage or patch of cover.

The enormous scale of this country is part of what makes it special. Third-party unit analysis of the Cheyenne River region notes established whitetail populations, pockets of mule deer, and the potential for above-average bucks of both species.

How We Hunt

Every hunt is dictated by the conditions.

Weather, wind, hunting pressure, food sources and deer movement can completely change where we need to be from one day to the next. Rather than forcing one hunting style, we adapt.

Expect to spend serious time behind optics.

We'll use vantage points to break down large sections of country, checking draws, ridgelines, creek systems, feeding areas and transition zones. Once we locate a buck worth pursuing, the hunt becomes about using terrain and wind to close the distance.

Depending on the situation, hunts can incorporate:

  • Spot-and-stalk hunting
  • Extensive glassing from strategic vantage points
  • Hunting creek bottoms and travel corridors
  • Working broken prairie, draws and rolling terrain
  • Watching feeding and transition areas
  • Moving between areas as deer patterns change

Some opportunities happen quickly. Others require hours of glassing and patience before the right buck finally shows himself.

That's Western deer hunting—and that's exactly why we love it.

Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation Hunting

Hunters need to understand that hunting within the exterior boundaries of the reservation can involve different land classifications and licensing requirements.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Game, Fish & Parks Department manages wildlife and hunting on tribal trust lands and maintains its own licensing system and seasons separate from the State of South Dakota. A South Dakota state license does not authorize hunting on tribal trust land; conversely, a tribal license does not authorize hunting on private deeded land where a state license is required.

For 2026, CRST has published separate Big Game Season, Fees & Limits regulations for both tribal members and non-members. Non-member big-game opportunities are handled through the Tribe's application/draw process, and CRST announced its 2026 non-member big-game lottery opening on May 20, 2026.

Because tribal and state seasons are separate, your exact hunt dates and licensing requirements depend on the tag and land being hunted. We recommend confirming the applicable season and license with Virgin Creek Outfitters when booking rather than advertising one blanket deer season that could incorrectly apply to both jurisdictions.

What to Bring

Hunters should arrive prepared for rapidly changing South Dakota conditions. Quality broken-in boots, layered clothing, rain and cold-weather gear, binoculars, appropriate shooting equipment and a day pack are highly recommended.

Most importantly, come ready to hunt.

The more country you're willing to glass, the more patient you're willing to be, and the harder you're willing to work when we find the right deer, the better the experience becomes.

Book Your South Dakota Deer Hunt

We keep it straightforward: hunt hard, respect the land, enjoy the country and do everything we can to put our hunters in front of the kind of buck they came to South Dakota to find.

Come experience deer hunting in Cheyenne River country with Virgin Creek Outfitters.
