The Hunt
Western sky outfitters deluxe guided hunts are as good as you will find anywhere! They are the classic, rocky mountain high country, horseback hunt. We target either elk or mule deer as the primary game on these hunts. We usually only book 6 hunters per season into our deluxe guided camps, to provide each hunter with the best hunting experience possible. All hunts are based out of a fully outfitted base camp, canvas cook tents and sleeping tents with wood stoves are provided, comfortable cots, tables and chairs all help make camp, your home away from home. Each camp is fully staffed with cooks, and guides. All food and drinks are provided and prepared for you each day. Each morning you will ride out of camp with your guide into the area you will be hunting for the day. You will return to camp each evening to a fresh cooked meal and a warm fire. Elk are the primary species we target on these hunts, but mule deer and black bear are also common and can be hunted for no additional charge. The hunts are priced based on 2 hunters per guide. One on one guided hunts are available for an additional fee. All hunts are typically 7 days, five full days of hunting and two days of travel, to and from camp. We have a 225lb. weight limit for all riders on our horseback hunts.
The Area
Our horseback deluxe guided hunts take place on the San Juan national forest in Colorado game management units 74, 75 or 751. We have one of the largest and most diverse permit areas in the state. We have many reserved camp locations and most of them are between 4-10 miles in by horseback from the trailhead. Elevations we hunt range from 8500ft to 12500ft. We hunt everything from lower ponderosa pine and scrub oak country all the way up to alpine meadows. Where you hunt depends on the season, because of the size of our area we are able to move our camp and follow the migration pattern of the game. Most areas we hunt can be accessed by horseback and then hunted on foot. Being in good physical condition will greatly increase your enjoyment and success on this hunt.

Western sky outfitters was established in 2012 with the purchase of one of the longest running and most successful outfitting areas in southwest Colorado. Since 2012 we have expanded to add many new permit areas as well as private land hunting opportunities. We now have access to over 800 sq miles of national forest including 2 wilderness areas, 1,500 sq miles of blm land and over 50,000 acres of private land all in Colorado. We specialize in hunts for elk, trophy mule deer, black bear, mountain lion, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and antelope. We also raise a herd of over 200 trophy class elk, and operate estate elk hunts on a 1,000 acre hunting preserve through our partner business elk quest.
