Merriam’s Turkeys

Our hunts focus on Merriam’s wild turkeys, a mountain-dwelling subspecies known for their striking white tail feathers and bold, black-and-white wing patterns. These birds thrive in high-elevation terrain, and their gobbling echoes across canyons and pine ridges during the spring mating season.

Diverse, Scenic Habitat

The Tres Piedras region—located in Taos County at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains—features a mix of piñon-juniper woodlands, mixed conifer forests, and open meadows, providing a perfect mix of cover and visibility for effective hunting.

Hunting Seasons

Spring Turkey Season:

• April through May
• Peak gobbling and calling response
• Ideal for using decoys and vocal calling techniques

Fall Turkey Season:

• September through November
• Spot and stalk style hunting
• Quieter birds requiring stealth and woodsmanship

Hunting Techniques

• Calling: Slate, box, and diaphragm calls are used to mimic hens and draw gobblers into range during the spring.
• Spot and Stalk: In the fall, hunters rely on glassing and moving slowly through likely habitat.
• Decoy Use: Particularly effective during the spring season, when toms are actively seeking hens.

Land Access

• Public Land Hunts: Most of our turkey hunts take place in the Carson National Forest, which offers extensive public land access with minimal hunting pressure.
• Private Land Access: Limited private land opportunities may be available. Our guided hunts ensure legal access, familiarity with the terrain, and better odds of locating active birds.

Turkey Hunt Pricing

• $300 per day, per hunter

(Includes guided hunt with in-field transportation. No lodging or meals.)

• 3-Day Hunt Package: $1,800 + tax and license

(Includes accommodations, guide service, and transportation while hunting.)

Licenses and permits must be purchased separately through New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. We’re happy to assist with the application and licensing process.
