Virgin Creek Outfitters' wild upland hunts are about covering country, watching good dogs work and pursuing birds in the prairie habitat they call home.

This isn't a preserve hunt or a planted-bird experience. We're hunting wild birds across genuine South Dakota upland habitat where success comes from putting in the miles, reading the cover and staying ready when the prairie suddenly erupts in front of you.

Depending on the hunt area, applicable season and regulations, opportunities can include South Dakota's prairie upland species.

How We Hunt

These hunts are designed around covering productive habitat.

We'll focus our efforts where birds are holding based on weather, food, cover and recent movement. Some areas may look empty until a dog gets birdy and suddenly everything changes.

Hunters should expect a traditional walk-up upland experience that can include:

• Working native prairie and grasslands
• Hunting draws, edges and transition cover
• Following dogs through productive bird habitat
• Moving between areas as conditions dictate
• Targeting wild birds rather than released birds

Bring comfortable boots and be prepared to walk. This is the kind of hunt where putting in another half mile can be the difference between a quiet stretch and one you'll talk about all season.

3-Day Wild Upland Hunt

• $250 per gun, per day

3-day hunt

• Minimum of 2 hunters per day
• $750 per hunter for all 3 days
• Meals and lodging available for an additional $100 per person, per day

5-Day Wild Upland Hunt

• $200 per gun, per day

5-day hunt

• Minimum of 4 hunters
• $1,000 per hunter for all 5 days
• Meals and lodging available for an additional $100 per person, per day

Meals & Lodging

Hunters who want to turn the trip into a complete camp experience can add meals and lodging for $100 per person, per day.

Spend the day walking South Dakota bird country, then return to camp, get off your feet and get ready to do it again the next morning.

Licensing & Seasons

Exact species, seasons, bag limits and licensing requirements depend on where the hunt takes place.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe maintains its own fall upland game bird regulations, while hunting conducted under South Dakota jurisdiction is governed by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.

Hunters should confirm the applicable licenses and regulations with Virgin Creek Outfitters before their hunt.
