Classic Prairie Grouse Hunting in Central South Dakota

Experience true prairie bird hunting in the wide-open country of central South Dakota. Prairie Outfitters LLC specializes in prairie chickens and sharp-tailed grouse, with the occasional Hungarian partridge encounter mixed in. Very few places in the United States consistently produce prairie chickens year after year—our core hunting area is one of them.

These hunts are built around strong, big-running pointing dogs and plenty of room to let them work. We run German Shorthaired Pointers and English Pointers that cover serious ground to locate birds in open prairie. UTVs are used strategically to access productive areas and reduce unnecessary walking between covers, but the heart of each hunt is still boots on the ground—walking into solid points and watching fast, popcorn-style flushes erupt across the grasslands.

Guests are welcome to bring their own dogs to rotate into the hunt if desired.

• Prairie Chicken - 3 Birds (In combination with Sharp-tailed Grouse)
• Sharp-Tailed Grouse - 3 Birds (In combination with Prairie Chickens)
• Occasional Hungarian Partridge - 5 Birds

Upland hunters joining us for prairie grouse have two lodging options depending on availability and preference.

Guests may stay at our private High‑Point Lodge, which offers a comfortable, hunter-friendly atmosphere close to the hunting grounds—perfect for relaxing after a full day behind the dogs.

For those who prefer to stay in town, hotel accommodations in Pierre are also available, providing easy access to restaurants, bars, and additional amenities some guests enjoy after hunting hours. Either option keeps you close to the action while offering a comfortable place to recharge for the next day afield.
